Who manages your money?

Continuing our introduction to the mechanisms and people within GTC’s Asset Management team, meet some of the team who carry out the responsibilities of managing your assets. In these short interviews, the team provides insight into their personal lives and answers some questions about themselves and their families.

Manty Seligman
Director – Asset Management

Manty is a married dad of three, two daughters (28 and 22), and a son (25). Manty believes that the family unit is hugely important and considers himself a family man.

Manty jokes “When I was younger, I aspired to being a “benevolent dictator””.

Manty resides in Sandton, Johannesburg, and primarily working out of the Jo’burg office. Manty found that his early fascination with – and desire to understand – market movements and pricing, drew him to want to understand economics and social interactions. Originally drawn to derivative instruments and arbitrage (the ability to profit from opportunities others do not see), Manty’s interests evolved to holistic wealth creation.

Manty’s ideal environment outside of managing assets is in the bush, involved in wildlife conservation. If not this, Manty would choose to be reading a book on the beach – only after exercising, of course!

Manty’s motivation and focused work ethic comes from his desire to safeguard his family as well as to towards a better society.

Clive Eggers
Head – Multi Managed Portfolios

“The purpose of my work is to add direct value to my clients’ lives, something that I find enormously rewarding.” Clive attributes his evergreen work motivation to his faith, family, and a fiercely competitive disposition.

Clive reflects upon a hazy memory of wanting to be a game ranger in his younger years, driven by a still present love of animals and the bush.

With a family which includes four children under the age of 14, Clive speaks of deeply valuing his family life considering this life’s richest blessings.

When asked what he would do every day if he didn’t have to work and if money wasn’t a factor, Clive immediately responded that he would do church and faith related work, travel the world, run, and write, in that order.

Clive lives near the coast in Stellenbosch, and enjoys family time, swimming, walking on the beach, body boarding, fishing, running, and kayaking. The list goes on…, beach holidays are clearly a favourite.

Samir Narotam
Portfolio Manager

“If money wasn’t an object – and I wasn’t employed within the Asset Management team – I would open a restaurant, cook, and feed the less fortunate.”

Living in Bassonia, Johannesburg, and not (yet) having any children of his own, Samir notes that his extended family ensures that he and his wife are intricately involved in family life, including an array of tasks from changing diapers to completing college application forms, a lifestyle that he wouldn’t have any other way.

Getting out of the busy city life every December, and into the bush at the Kruger National Park, is something that Samir cherishes. He relishes waking up to the sounds and sights of the bush, enjoys braaiing and relaxing in the tranquil and quiet environment which the game reserve
affords.

Samir has always loved the investment world and is motivated to give his best every day, citing that “life is short, and time passes quickly. If I am going to spend my time doing something, I may as well empty the tank!”
